PLUTO

The Orgin Of pluto 'The Disney Dog'

Pluto who is also known as “Pluto the Pup” is creation of Walt Disney and first appeared in “The Chain Gang” in 1930. Pluto starred in a number of independent shorts in 1940s and 1950s but mostly he is shown as Mickey’s pet dog. Pluto was designed and supervised by Disney animator Norm Ferguson. Instead of being flat the dog’s design gave him the appearance of being round. Pluto is unique in the sense that he is an “actual” dog character, unlike Goofy and other characters of Disney he can’t speak. His second appearance was as Minnie’s dog, Rover, in “The Picnic” (1930). Pluto’s voice actors have been Pinto Colvig, Lee Millar, Sr., Clarence “Ducky” Nash and Jim MacDonald and Bill farmer for “Prince and the Pauper”.

In his first appearance Pluto is a bloodhound who is on the trail of escaped Mickey Mouse. It was in “The Moose Hunt” that Pluto was given his name after the “Dwarf Planet”, Pluto which was discovered in the same year in which the character was introduced. In this short Pluto is accidentally shot by Mickey and when both are being chased by a moose Pluto is shown as flying with his ears. Pluto is one of the few cartoon characters shown to actually possess thought process. It is shown through the use of character animation in “Playful Pluto”, in which Pluto is thinking how to separate himself from a piece of fly paper after getting stuck to it. Pluto’s first official starring role was in “Pluto’s Quinpuplet’s” in which Fifi leaves him in charge of five pups. Pluto gets drunk while the pups play with spray paint.

In Pluto’s own series, his friends include Fifi the Peke, Dinah the Daschund, and Ronnie the St. Bernard Puppy. His foes are Black Pete, Donald Duck, Butch the Bulldog, Figaro the Kitten, Chip n’ Dale and the Buzz the Bee. In “Pluto Junior” Pluto has a son who is known simply as “Pluto Junior”. In short “Pluto’s Kid Brother”, Pluto has a younger brother named K.B. Pluto is shown as Mickey’s best friend and they enjoy fishing and watching TV together. In several shorts his wife/girlfriend Fifi the Peke is shown as Minnie’s pet.

Pluto also appeared in the television series “Mickey Mouse Works”, “Disney’s House of Mouse” and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”. He also appeared briefly in “Quack Pack”. But somehow Pluto was not included in “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” released in 1983. Pluto featured in “The Prince and the Pauper” in 1990, “Runaway Brain”, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in 1988 along with making a cameo appearance in “The Really Mighty Ducks” episode of the “Quack Pack”. Pluto’s “Lend a Paw” a remake of “Mickey’s Pal Pluto” was the Academy Award winner for Best Cartoon.
